The holidays can be a whirlwind of excitement for everyone, but especially for families with autistic twins. All that excitement, followed by the inevitable return to routine, can leave everyone feeling a bit… off. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! In fact, it’s estimated that more than 60% of adults experience it.

The post-holiday blues are real, and it’s completely normal to feel a bit down after the festivities. The disruption to routines, the sensory overload of holiday gatherings, and the sheer exhaustion can take a toll on the whole family. If you are feeling this way, it’s only natural that your autistic twins might also feel this way.

Be gentle

Start off by easing back into your routines gradually, although you may find that your autistic twins crave routine and want to be back to “business as usual”. Instead of a sudden shift, gradually reintroduce routines. Start with slightly earlier bedtimes a few nights in advance, then gradually move wake-up times closer to their usual schedule. This gradual approach allows for a smoother transition and minimizes the stress of abrupt changes.

If you find your autistic triplets are getting upset and overstimulated, try some calming activities with them. And Next Comes L has a great printable activity with calm down choices such as blowing bubbles or practicing breathing exercises. You can also try making sensory glitter calm down bottles.

You probably already do this, but don’t underestimate the benefit of a sensory friendly home. After the holiday chaos, your twins (and probably you!) will crave some peace and quiet. Dim the lights, play some calming music, and provide a quiet corner or sensory space where your twins can retreat to when they feel overwhelmed.

I am a huge fan of aromatherapy and scent’s abilities to change our mood. I use different essential oils throughout the year to create a seasonal experience inside our home. Some of my favorite relaxing scents are lavender, neroli, clary sage and sandalwood. You can either use an oil burner, candle, or even lotions or pillow sprays with calming scents. I frequently use a humidifier with a few drops of essential oils in to freshen up a room (although read the instructions to ensure this is safe for your machine).

Get moving

Why does exercise help us during the winter months? Engaging in regular physical activity helps boost endorphins, those feel-good chemicals in the brain that elevate mood and reduce feelings of depression. You can choose to do these exercises either indoors or outdoors, but the point is to get moving!

Aerobic exercises, such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or dancing, are particularly effective. These activities increase your heart rate, improve circulation, and release endorphins, leading to an overall sense of well-being.

Strength training exercises, such as lifting weights or using resistance bands, can also be beneficial. Building muscle mass can improve overall energy levels and boost self-esteem, both of which can be impacted by SAD. Additionally, mind-body exercises like yoga and tai chi can be incredibly helpful. These practices combine physical movement with deep breathing and mindfulness techniques, which can help to reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and enhance overall mental clarity.

Take care of yourself

And most importantly, don’t forget to take care of yourself! It’s impossible to be there for your autistic twins if you’re feeling burnt out. Schedule some time for yourself to relax and recharge. Whether it’s a long bath, a walk in the park, or simply enjoying a cup of tea in peace, make sure you’re taking care of your own well-being. If possible, try to get a break and get out of the house child free for a while.

If you’re having a hard time, don’t hesitate to reach out to other parents in our Community! So many parents tell us how they finally felt like they found their tribe when the joined. Sharing experiences and offering support from other people who just get it, is priceless! Remember, it’s okay to feel a bit down, be patient with yourself and your autistic twins, and remember that things will eventually return to normal. And if you are feeling particularly down, it’s always wise to talk about this with a therapist or your doctor.
