Hi I’m Alicia, the mother of triplet teenagers.
The triplets were our first experience of parenting, so we were not sure what to expect. By the time they were about 10 months old, we could tell something was different about one of my sons. He was very slow to develop his gross and fine motor skills, seemed fascinated with lights and moving objects, and would often not respond to his name being called.
We worked with early intervention specialists, but at age two, they told us he couldn’t be autistic because he was chatty and made eye contact. We later learned this was a common misconception with autism.
Our son was finally diagnosed autistic at age 6. While we were going through the process, we did not know any other families like ours. We had friends with twins, triplets, and even quadruplets, but none were facing the challenges we were. Similarly, we joined autism groups, but families there did not have the challenges we did in dealing with multiples.
In 2013, I began the Autistic Twins Triplets and More community to find other families like ours. Our community is the FIRST of its kind and over the years has grown and provided support to thousands of families globally. Fast forward 10 years, and I received my own diagnosis of ADHD in my mid-40s, and I am considering going for an autism assessment myself.
This community is a labour of love for families just like ours. We are neurodivergent affirming and do not support the use of terms like “curing” autism or vaccine blaming. We accept, support and love our neurodiversity, and strive to bring families together in understanding and love. We hope you’ll join us!
